Joong-ho is a dirty detective turned pimp in financial trouble as several of his girls have recently disappeared without clearing their debts. While trying to track them down, he finds a clue that the vanished girls were all called up by a same client whom one of his girls is meeting with right now.
Saturday night Korean noir! This stylish serial killer mystery was a big hit in its native land (and got scooped up for a screening at Cannes!), marking an auspicious debut for its director, Na Hong-jin. Frenetic, extreme, and high-velocity in the baroque traditions of 21st century Asian cinema.
As gripping as a thriller can get. Sleaze meets evil and finds redemption? Not one for your 12 year old daughter to watch as elements are truly horrifying, But there are light touches mainly provided by police ineptitude. Brilliant in many ways.
Incontournable.
Just the first 15 minutes and last 20 minutes give the tension goods. The rest of The Chaser mainly trades in genre cliches in its Dirty Harry-style detective and incompetent police, as well as over-pronounced scenes of drama (IE. a syrupy musical score, with slow-motion.) Moreover, the last shot symbolizing the character as a father figure is the definition of the predictable way that its story feels stagy.
"The Chaser" is probably one of the best films I've seen. It's also very frustrating. As the police narrow in on the killer, they continually bungle the operation due to their own incompetence. Is this meant to express how absurd the universe can be or merely a contrivance to increase the film's runtime? A dark, dark film that delivers popcorn thrills at the same time it acknowledges that life is often without hope.
One great depressing&intense film. Really, I mean REALLY, succeeded in pissing me out. A film that caused that much effect must be a great film that delivers. A rare Gripping & successful film, definitely worth seeing. Recommended to all Telemubies of Mubi land! seriously, go and find The Chaser, guys! you won't regret every minutes of it!
Saw it tonight after having seen it when it came out in 08. Not nearly as thrilling or intelligent as I remembered it. Many plot holes and unbelievable coincidences in the story that just don't seem plausible in a big, busy city like Seoul. I know this was made in criticism of the justice system in Korea, but the entire film rides on the cops being retarded beyond belief. Removed from favorites.
Il y a quelques éléments ressemblant à Memories of Murder mais le dernier gagne facilement des côtés visuel et narratif, surtout vu qu'il y a des deus ex machina dans ce film. La petite fille est merveilleuse.
