I watched Celebration with little knowledge of its production history or YSL. Even before reading about both I found the work tremendous. It's an experience you live in, ideas firing as you process the textures, images and sounds it wilfully provides and denies. What is the image of an icon. Is joy compatible with 'genius'. When Berge gives the response about sleepwalking I just about broke. This screenshot!
Almost feels like deconstruction of fashion documentary. Using discordant electronic sound and different video types, it has an avant-garde quality. However, this distracts from the content. I don't know a lot about Saint Laurent and left much the same way. The film's timeline is confusing and has a strange indifference to fashion. Partner Peter Berge comes across as a real piece of work though and YSL looks feeble.
Peek inside the magical kingdom and what do we find? The King ss in decline, his faithful manservant seeks the keys to the kingdom and brusquely sweeps all pretender away. The clothes sparkle and shimmer, dimmer then brighter. And the fair maidens continue to be fair
