Generous re-rating. Chazzelle aptly illustrates the price of genius and excellence in art development; authoritarian mentoring in order to harness someone's potential. When considering directing monoliths: Hitchcock, Kubrick, Kurosawa, Von Trier, Welles, and Ford, one must also remember the painful and uncompromising journey they take cast and crew on. Does dictatorial delegation ignite transcendence? Yes and no.
A dry run for what would later be the powerhouse of 2014 feature length Whiplash, this still delivers a punch to the gut, although a softer and less impactful one. Still the potential is on display and it's a smart choice when on the road of indie filmmaking to do a test run to demonstrate a tangible direction your headed rather than just pitch it.
saw this immediately aftr the theater from LLL. it takes me forever to focus and watch movies, but i was like..i have to compare. this is one of my favorite fucking films. i could talk about it endlessly. the pain of being an artist, killing yourself for genius, your brain being a traitor and abusive like a mentor. someone living through you because of their failures. it's just such a good fucking film
Whiplash ist filmisches Adrenalin! In einer Zeit, da Filme von Marktforschern auf bestimmte Zielgruppen hin konzipiert werden, ist das hier ein tief persönliches und lebendiges Drama! watched out of curiosity after enjoying the full-length. definitely fulfills its intention of showing potential, but (understandably) hits nowhere near as hard as the full film. actually, the full film is even better than i would have expected after watching this short -- does that mean this is worse than i expected or the full film is better than i would have expected? i'm not too sure.
