If you want to know how we got from Annie Hall to Knocked Up, there’s only one route, and it’s through this movie. When Harry Met Sally … is a milestone in the shape of a happy collaboration between three distinct Jewish comedy sensibilities — those of director Reiner (menschy and sentimental), screenwriter Nora Ephron (romantic but also tough-minded and feminist), and costar Billy Crystal (blunt, jabby, wisecracking) — that together became more than the sum of their parts.
