3 1/2 out of 5 stars. The Man in the Shadows combines (more) a subjective love letter to Val Lewton's work with objective facts. The dissection of Lewton's work put a new perspective on it for me and forced me to rediscover its genius and innovation.
A solid doc about a great underappreciated filmmaker. Have the old DVD box set in my home library. Would like the recent criterion releases. Marty is clearly a fan, as his love shines through even in the restrained setting of a documentary. Good stuff and maybe will help people rediscover Lewton's work. 3.5 stars
