There is a certain tranquility and lightness of heart here that one doesn't usually find in the cinema of Claire Denis. Denis is a master filmmaker and this short feature, made for the French television series 'Tous les garcons et les filles de leur age', ranks amongst her achievements. Wall to wall music amplifies the time period, the underlying politics and frankly a young person's need to experience adulthood.
A nice little tale depicting a perspective that's not heard often enough in film, it also proves the rule that lack of judgement often correlates to honesty. Some terrific dance scenes and great soundtrack help lift the quest for these two stoic young ladies to find their way into the adult world. Such transactions are rarely idyllic, and therein lies the humanity.
