Lovers Marianne and Jean-Paul spend their vacation in a villa near St.-Tropez. The main feature of the villa is a swimming pool, stage for most of the action. After a visit Marianne invites former lover Harry and his teenage daughter Penelope to stay. Tension between the grown-ups rises.

Deray's lethargic hymn to sexuality is given full reign in a masterful dissection of the villa's swimming pool where idleness scratches past wounds and unfavourable comparisons. Only such great cast, not only in the close ups but also in all medium shots, could sustain the torpor, gorgeously dissipated among beautiful bodies and expensive decor. Thus, imagery such as the Simca-Maserati index of resentment, glows!
Guadagnino really had amazing source material for "A Bigger Splash" and he gave it good use, mostly by infatuating the personality traces of each character and making them clash harder. "La Piscine" is irresistible with its french flair, slow pace and impeccably dressed people, all enjoying one hot summer... the drowning scene was not very convincing I must say, but overall I enjoyed it a lot.
Unlike most suspense films - here, the languid atmosphere dictates the actual narrative and pace. Even the police investigation succumbs to the becalmed mood, which doesn't seem to bother the inspector one bit. It felt like I was really on vacation with Schneider and Delon, relaxing about this house. This alone, justifies Deray's approach but it also reveals how much a mood can affect the next turn your life takes.
wow, what a long time to spend vacationing with these characters in Saint-Tropez. it's obvious: watch this for the golden bodies & playfulness-disguising-disgust of cinematic French romances. Is Rob Lowe our Alain Delon? they exude they same kind of man-child vulnerable charm. although "we" are not supposed to, I liked him the best: it's hard when someone is taking away someone you want. Jane B. is so cutely weird.
2.5 Watchable, unmemorable. J. Birkin's uncharismatic, banal performance is just underlined by R. Schneider's artfulness and class, even though the movie doesn't even give her enough room for such development.
