Giancarlo Giannini, Wertmüller’s actor of choice, gives a wonderfully comic performance as the sad sack “Mimi”, a Sicilian laborer whose refusal to vote for the Mafia’s candidate leads him to lose his job, his wife and his home—before finding love with a beautiful radical.

Who says leftist politics, ideas and musings can't make for absolutely poignant comedy and balls to the wall farce. This film had me in tears laughing while also showing the dynamics of true leftist conviction versus toxic individualist focus. Its a hilarious tragicomedy that proves Wertmuller is a genius. Best Giannini performance and Melato is as incredible as ever.
Lesser Wertmuller to be sure, but even lesser is better than most. Mariangela Melato is stunning as always while Giancarlo Giannini comes off as some sort of bizarre spastic Sicilian/Buster Keaton hybrid - not complaining just saying. The Italian title is "Mimi, Metal-worker, Wounded in Honor" which seems a far better fit.
An intricate look at what it is to be a human being in our modern, industrialized economy where workers have little if any rights. This amazing film takes us along the entire range of human emotion via amazing acting and impeccable direction as we follow a man's ascension through a treacherous, mob-controlled workplace and the inevitable feeling of impending financial doom which parenting multiple children brings.
The "love scene" with the obese woman is absolutely hysterical. Giannini was outstanding in the Wertmuller films although Pasqualino Settebellezze (Seven Beauties) was her masterpiece. Some basic knowledge about Italy, Italian culture and Italian history is necessary to fully appreciate them tho I think
