Intriguing court case from the vaults, revolving around issues of identity, authenticity, and community life as theater. Told economically, the story retains its core mystery even after everything is elucidated. Which makes it feel universal and relevant in a darkly poetic way, not unlike Herzog's Kaspar Hauser film.
Much can be learned through this film about mid-16th century everyday life. That's the influence of the historian Natalie Zemon Davis who guarded the representativeness in the project of adapting this well documented case onto the screen. I feel, because it significantly touches concepts like social relations and religious perception, this film can be placed in the scarce rank of great historical dramas.
