A triumph, mixing soap-opera plotting – a blind girl, a detective, a lost diamond, plus the ultimate twitchy villain with a pencil moustache – with naturalistic scenes like e.g. the lovers’ farewell in Crimea, embracing in wide-shot in a muddy street.
