Mendelsohn doesn’t quite have [Catherine Keener’s] presence, but such charisma is not required here. Anders is weak and easily led, and some of the most memorable moments in Mendelsohn’s performance are when he is made to recount his incriminating and shameful foibles – his mobile mouth twitches at the corners as he squirms, a picture of mortification if not complete contrition.

While Holofcener (adapting a 2014 novel by Ted Thompson) uses sometimes pat templates to explore the heart of bourgeois darkness, it must be said the end product is far less neutered than one would expect.

If Holofcener’s films so far have ranged from very good to great, The Land of Steady Habits exists somewhere at the low end of that continuum. But that still makes it a very good movie, full of sharp dialogue and lacerating insight about the haute-suburban milieu that the script both skewers and struggles to understand.
