Odd construction of the film here. Yes, it does have lesbianism and an important scene in the club that has documentary importance. It also has very good dialogue from the lead. But at heart it is a not very good drama with important coverage of mechanism of abuse, jealousy, co-dependence and dominant/submissive dynamics are all too light in treatment. Not sure why lesbian cult, the gender of character is irrelevant.
SISTER GEORGE might well be the purest culmination of Aldrichian perfection; the messiest, thorniest perfection imaginable. It is of note that he and screenwriter Marcus connived to make the movie significantly more confrontationally provocative than the play from which it is adapted. They also cultivated its warmth. There is no end to my fascination with performance style in Aldrich's women-centered films.
