Two star film but four stars for John Bratby's paintings, so we'll settle for three. I just re-read the novel, then re-watched the film, which misses the radical and visionary original beauty altogether. I hadn't noticed before this reading what a devastating critique of England the novel is, too.
I could not have been more surprised at how outrageously hilarious, inexplicably insane, and heartbreakingly poignant this film was. It's rare anymore that a film immediately becomes an all time favorite but this truly is one. Guinness is perfect and his script (Guinness wrote the script!!) is an absolute knockout. Please watch this immediately!
It is difficula to review this film as there appears to be some form of censorship that won't allow us to rent a film. We are Irish Nationals leaving in Taiwan which is an open society and not a province of China. What is the problem?
