High expectations were not met. Presumably this would be the first in a trilogy, although five years later and there's still no second film. There was too much information coming from all angles at all times with no time to let it sink in, yet it still felt thin and under-developed (especially considering the source material). Looks great, but that's the only high point.
why did he even bother making this movie, since it has nothing to do with the book? did he even read it? I'm pissed. chris weitz, you clearly showed your skills in making new moon. keep on with that stuff, don't ruin good things.
A disappointing adaptation to a memorable Pullman novel. This could have been the start of a franchise in the same vein as Harry Potter and The Hunger Games, but it tanked thanks to shoddy direction and an over-emphasis on glacial CGI.
I had a good nap while watching this piece of crap. It was the only good thing about the film. Oh, and the popcorn at the cinema on that day was especially tasty -- extra caramel, or something -- so that's another good thing.
I must say this is one of my favorite movies in terms of production design for CGI. In my opinion this is one of the most beautiful steam-punk universes ever created for film and a touchstone for anyone interested in special effects design. A shame the series was never continued.
Overproduced project that never manage to grasp the universe heads-on and the rich person gallery doesn't shine as much as it could. What it do get right is having a child actress who impresses me with her acting that overshadow the more established Hollywood faces and I like the unique universe that is created where people can change themselves into animals. Worse is it's non-ending making it an unfinished film.
