Based on Juan Rulfo’s magical realist story of the same name, El gallo de oro recounts the rise and fall of Dionisio Pinzón, a poor town crier who calls the local cock fights and dreams of a grander destiny.

I sort of see what Gavaldon was going for: a folkloric tale about Mexicaness. But the original story was written by B. Traven a German in Mexico, and someone whose fiction I find to be boring. Not even the screenplay by Garcia Marquez and Fuentes could create something genuine. The performances are probably my favorite part, but with Gavaldon forcing Lucha Villa to sing every 5 minutes, it gets a bit overwhelming.
