The Clowns

I clowns

Directed by Federico Fellini
Italy, West Germany, 1970
Comedy, Fantasy
  • Italian
  • English

Synopsis

A young boy watches a circus get constructed outside his bedroom window—thus begins Federico Fellini’s “docu-comedy”, a personal, genre-bending ode to one of his lifelong obsessions.

Our take

What gems hide in the shadow of monuments? Fellini’s biggest films are so famous that it’s tragically easy for his smaller wonders to escape notice. The Clowns is an off-the-beaten-path fan favorite, an explosion of documentary, fantasy, and music, where the maestro’s imagination flowers!
