Imagine a Terrence Malick version of Young Mr. Lincoln set in the Indiana woods, directed in a manner that honors the master. Who knows why this was hidden away in the Panorama.

It may be unfair to hold a first-time filmmaker to the standards of one of the medium’s most accomplished talents. But Edwards presents little alternative. The film is so beholden to the moods and manners of Malick that even its more estimable elements… are diffused into the ether. Edwards’s homage to his master plays like sycophantic, if well-meaning, imitation, like a kid trying to impress his dad by swinging his golf clubs or clumsily strumming a guitar.

Edwards understands that these aren’t the kind of folk who talk their problems through, but the family avoids addressing matters of substance to such a degree that, ultimately, this world Edwards has conjured, and all the people in it, seem terribly artificial.
