This political satire, based on the 1994 novel of the same name by Christopher Buckley, follows the chief spokesman for Big Tobacco as he spins the “benefits” of cigarettes in a time when America began to realize the health hazards stemming from smoking.
This film is not currently playing on MUBI but 30 other great films are. See what’s now showing
What made this film so lovely was Aaron Eckhart's shit eating grin. But yeah, I loved that the film never coped out in terms of supporting his characters choices and decisions. Although I wish that certain things weren't glossed over (like his character being a smoker but we don't see him smoke?) overall I thought this was a pretty good and very enjoyable comedy with some bite.
A neat little satire with great performances (especially by Eckhart) and does a good job at showing both sides of the argument. It's not a movie to go and rave about, but it's a nice little piece of work.
A not-as-clever-as-it-coulda-been black dramedy about a between good and evil Big Tobacco lobbyist (read: spin doctor) and the culture and politics of vice in general, whether it's drugs, violence, moral grandstanding, or news reporting, this at least, as a hopefully soon-to-be ex-smoker, got me interested in checking out the book it was based on, which I plan on doing sometime in the future...
Completely devoid of any sort of fake morality and riddled with a twisted sense of humor, this film is a brilliant piece of contemporary political satire. The writing is deliciously smart and cynical and Eckart achieves the impossible, by turning his amoral lobbyist into a likable, refreshingly bold man of his time. The scenes with the MOD ("Merchants of Death") trio are definitely my favorite.
Quanto può piacere un rappresentante di sigarette? A quanto pare tanto.
TYFS is like a short wrestling match: Guy beats up, gets beaten down, twists the game and wraps with a victory. Classic American Narrative. Still, this baby brings duality to the table and feels fresh. What's right and wrong for someone to do to pay his mortgage? A fast paced movie that makes us wish for more of the same juice. A brilliant satire on the capitalist world on the both sides of the coin. Great picture!
