Those who feel was underwhelming, underachieving, and (strangest of all) confusing are clearly looking for thrills an American film like this never promises to provide. What it did provide is a sweaty, atmospheric procedural drama surrounding all-too-real abductions and murders. The performances could have been stronger, admittedly, but the pace was slow and gritty with a warm and well-suited cinematographic style.
A film with such a potential to be great. Sadly, it is pulled down by a messy script, and some tonal shifts that disrupts the rhytm of the film. I could almost see a brilliant film somewhere within those fields of fog.
To call TEXAS KILLING FIELDS a TV-quality police procedural would be a slight against its ambitions, as well as against the often-entertaining comfort food TV police procedurals provide. Ami Mann's film sports an impressive pedigree of talent, and a plot with potential, but it adds up to something meaningless. The impressive RED RIDING films are similar yarns that suffocate with atmosphere in a way this fails to.
This movie had everything going for it but somehow it did not add up to much. Despite some good casting and solid production work I think the blame has to be assigned to shoddy direction and script writing.
Ami Canaan Mann may know how to operate a camera, but it doesn't help when she's working with a script that is half-finished and poorly executed. The premise is great, the cast even better, but the result is a film that I really wanted to like - and to some extent loved, but overall come across as a television movie with a-list stars. A shame, really.
Messa in scena splendida, movimenti sempre dosati e finale in linea col tutto.
An incoherent disappointment from the daughter of the king of crime-thriller movies, Michael Mann. The problem stems from a combination of an unfocussed script and jumbled editing, but the dark cinematography and silly colour timing also throw things off somewhat. Still, it looks like Ami Canaan Mann has inherited a knack for atmosphere and mood that her father is known for.
