A sobering mid-life crisis fuels dissatisfaction in Philip Dimitrius, to the extent where the successful architect trades his marriage and career in for a spiritual exile on a remote Greek island where he hopes to conjure meaning into his life…

I really love this movie. John Cassavetes and Gena Rowlands are perfect as the dissatisfied couple. Susan Sarandon and Molly Ringwald are as lovely as ever and Raul Julia steals the show as Kalibanos. The Greek Island scenery is heavenly.
As much an homage, and a bit imitative, to Cassavettes as a modern retelling of a personal favorite of the Bard's tales. Somewhat dated, Hollywoodish while masquerading as independent film, it manages to be fairly enjoyable. 3.5 rather than 4.
It would have made sense for Cassavetes to direct this himself, based on the unflinching study of relationships he provides in his own films. If you're not familiar with the play, it would help to read it, but, doing so will also expose the flaws in Mazursky's treatment. Liked it's ambition, bieautiful film, acting standouts: magnificent Gena Rowlands and Vittorio Gassman. I will watch it again. "Show me the magic"
