Quite possibly the most deranged Hong film I've seen. I'm thankful I have enough of a relationship with his films that I could hear the man out - one theory could even suggest that the first half isn't even intended to be good (debatable). The meta elements are appealing, even more so as it's disturbingly based on a real suicide attempt. The main character is about as unpleasant as he's concocted however 3.5
Aha! So here it is. TALE OF CINEMA is Hong's first film made through his own production company and also, it would seem, where he starts in w/ the zooms! I have made a huge discovery (which will be a matter of utter indifference to near everyone I know). This is one of his most remarkable films in terms of layering. The structure is not not necessarily complex but facilitates a dazzling schematic of reverberation.
My first experience of Hong Sang-soo. Already I'm in love with his aesthetic; the relaxed naturalism, the slow, seemingly unprovoked zooms, the self-reflexivity. I was less enamoured with the storytelling. While it definitely has some interesting elements that are worth considering, for instance, exploring the back & forth relationship between cinema & real-life, I found the two main characters strange & unpleasant.
Hong's film tells us what great film's does to people. We want to materialize the life and scenes and character's we see on screen. We pretend that the universe revolves around us -- with that piece of fiction describing our exact feeling inside.
Cinemateca, 4 Dez. 2019
It centers on a man who becomes obsessed with a short film depicting his life leading him to manipulates his life to recreate the film as his reality.
This is a dangerous tale of cinema. That many of us mistakes reality for events we see on screen, smudging the lines between fiction & reality. What the actress said perfectly is smack on the head of a reply - “I don’t think you really understood the film."
