While it wasn’t what Demme had wanted, the result of the studio’s meddling is a satisfying, feel-good theatrical cut (of course, it also unwittingly created a Holy Grail in the form of the workprint, which is only available today on an out-of-print VHS).

Demme initially emphasized the kinship between women; Hawn, who produced Swing Shift in addition to starring in it, ultimately recut the film to highlight heterosexual romance. Yet, even though the finished film unfolds in looser fashion than it could have, it still conveys the charms innate to many other films made both by its director and by its star. Swing Shift is a gentle film with love for every character in it.

It’s gentle, rather than revolutionary and perhaps too quick to forgive its characters and to tidily divorce them from the moral consequences of their actions, but as a warm, well-mounted depiction of a period in American life accorded much less attention that it warrants, it’s a very enjoyable diversion, elevated by Lahti’s terrific turn. And by Kurt Russell’s dimples.
