Filmmakers Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden (Half Nelson) weave this introspective sports drama concerning a talented Dominican baseball player who longs to break into the American big league and earn the money needed to support his impoverished family.

Pardon the pun, but I found this to be a sweet movie. It just ambles along in a very kind way. On its face (or literally on the poster) it is a movie about that American Pastime, baseball. But really I think this is more a tale of a stranger in a strange land. The isolation, confusion, and longing for home. Each setting, the Dominican Republic, Iowa, and New York are all richly shot and feel like real settings.
I loved it...it wasn't a sports film, that's where you go wrong, by perceiving the film as such. It was moreso a character study/coming of age piece that touched on isolation/immigration/racism. Beautiful naturalistic subtle piece<<<difficult to accomplish all of this and not produce a zzzzzzzz film. Ryan and Anna say themselves "this was not intended to be a sports film at all"...
