Critics reviews

Most problematic was the framing device: a man playing the elderly Ryan visits the cemetery where rows and rows of white crosses mark the graves of his comrades. The veteran’s homage feels preachy, a superfluous attempt to underscore the film’s patriotism. It was the “responsible” director abandoning art for a commemorative history lesson, telling us schoolchildren how to feel.
