Skittish chamber piece that, at the speed of a dervish, paints an effective cameo portrait of artist and muse. Warm performances from the leads balance the strains of the yelled declamatory dialogue. Frenetic direction and the usual gift of gorgeously realised period detail add-up to a pleasing miniature of a film with a surprisingly big heart. Artistic inspiration is scant but the joie-de-vivre is infectious.
