A quartet of short films from Jean-Luc Godard, Roberto Rossellini, Pier Paolo Pasolini and Ugo Gregoretti, covering everything from romantic frisson to the apocalypse to Orson Welles making a movie about Jesus Christ.

I saw this a while back. An omnibus film, so some segments are better than others. I don't remember which ones I liked best but I remember that some of them were good. Maybe I will watch it again one day and can be more specific. I definitely love Pasolini, Rosselini and Godard too, usually.
The inevitable mixed bag that is the portmanteau film. Even the best of them, Dead of Night, was uneven in form and tenor. Here you’d think a collection of supposed critical essays on moral and social themes would provide something to chew on especially when helmed by the likes of Rossellini, Godard and Pasolini. And yet no, collectively it’s tonally all over the place. Cinematic Bonsai this is not.
Extraordinary omnibus film which contains ample treasures beyond the obvious brilliance of Pasolini's segment. Rossellini's unjustly underrated piece is a superb and subtle meditation on modernist disenchantment followed by a more radical version of the same theme in Godard. Truly remarkable is Gregoretti's film where a riveting Togniazzi crushes (by being crushed) consumer society and its discontents. Masterpiece x4
