What is with art house movie buffs watching a movie like this and expecting it to be a deep and meaningful masterpiece. This movie is awesome. I know, it's no Fanny & Alexander, it's no Casablanca, it's no La Strada... But fuck I love it
I feel bad for the film. It has an interesting premise but really suffers from some terrible direction. I know they were fighting a low-budget but they could have been more inventive with its music. Bad film-making doesn't make your film a "cult" film either but its ideas are inspired enough. If you don't take it seriously, its fun for what it is.
A wannabe cult hit inspired by the insta-mash of it's midnight movie predecessors. Dialogue is sung in verse, taking lyrical cues from a metallic Andrew Lloyd Webber. Scrappy steam-punk SFX and comic book segues provide eye-candy but the weirdness du jour is stale.
A lot of costume sourcing was done locally, and I find it entertaining to see little trinkets bought at dinky goth shops in a film.
Many of the songs are fun, inspires lots of cosplaying, and having a member of Skinny Puppy in your cast definitely helps your cred.
