Critics reviews

These are the corners where people eke out their living, and filmmakers Dorothy Arzner and Clare Denis depict this eking in drastically different styles – the lucidity of classical Hollywood filmmaking versus the oblique poetic strategies of the European art film. What sets these films apart is how they depart from the traditions they emerge out of, creating something bold and elusively new.

  • Jeff Heinzl's rating of the film Nénette and Boni

This is the Christmas story if Mary, pregnant, smokes a pack of cigarettes a day and doesn’t believe that God exists. (He doesn’t.) Joseph is her brother, in love with his sibling but more in love with the warmth of the non-Christ she will birth. The shepherds bring a bunny and the finest breads, while Vincent Gallo is somewhere smiling, prepared to eat of the body himself.

  • Stevie's rating of the film Nénette and Boni

A beautifully sensuous film from an auteur who creates art using a continuous flow of images and feelings without adhering to a conventional story line. Agnes Godard is a wonderful cinematographer.

  • El Biffo's rating of the film Nénette and Boni

Perhaps the most accessible of Claire Denis' films, this one has a linear story, and dialogue, perhaps even more than necessary. Valeria Bruni Tedeschi and Vincent Gallo as the baker and his wife are charming, but almost seem out of place in this film. Very good, but I prefer the more austere style of Beau Travail and White Material. 4 stars, nonetheless. Claire Denis is an important film maker.

  • Dale Wittig's rating of the film Nénette and Boni

Alice Houri and Grégoire Colin are the estranged sister and brother of the title who are reunited after the death of their mother. Valeria Bruni Tedesch plays the baker's wife, who figures as the center of Boni's sexual fantasies, and Vincent Gallo is charming as her American husband, the baker. There is a strangely tactile and olfactive quality to this sensual film that slips between fantasy, dream and waking life.

  • tidal waif's rating of the film Nénette and Boni

the famous plaisanteur nietzsche once said that to cure a woman, to redeem her, a man has to give her a child. this film seems to be made from the perspective of a female nietzsche , who boldly states: the same goes for a man, it is he who is saved and comforted by a child. and if i am to consider the unpleasant appendix that continues the assumption above, "woman needs children, a man is for her always only a means"

  • Wee Hunk's rating of the film Nénette and Boni

You could tell that he'd make a good father, because he had practiced with a bunny. When you're watching a Denis film you almost always have that sense that something bad is going to happen. You just don't know what it's going to be. I felt the story of the baker and his wife was a bit of a red herring. Will the bad thing involve them?

  • Ethan's rating of the film Nénette and Boni

Claire Denis delivers a seductive film filled to the brim with sexual frustration. Gregoire Colin gives a beautiful understated performance with so much intensity but manages to not oversell it. Alice Houri is almost an apparition as she is shackled to a situation she doesn't want to be in surrounded by people she doesn't want to see. A beautiful, gritty film.

  • saitosouta's rating of the film Nénette and Boni
