Swedish filmmaker Alf Sjöberg’s visually innovative, Cannes Grand Prix-winning adaptation of August Strindberg’s renowned 1888 play brings to scalding life the excoriating words of the stage’s preeminent surveyor of all things rotten in the state of male-female relations.

3,7 Time treated as a moebius strip: no inbound recollection and outbound perception, but a continuous single-surface band where back-to-back remembrance and actuality dash seamlessly like clauses in a run-on sentence. For a few centuries now anthropology has been busy to show that all differences are made not found, from aristocratic political precedence to nature's unequal distribution of talent to gender specific.
A great translation from play to screen. Interesting to see how Sjoberg connects the scenes from the past with the present.
The contrast of the servants and locals having a fun party, with Julie and Jean in a serious, sometimes hostile, discussion is very effective.
2,5. Beautifully shot and lit, what starts as visually strong and interesting reverts to an overtly theatrical and hysterical tonal mess, as the theatrics and needless flashbacks drag on. This renders the socio-hierarchical aspect insignificant and the characters completely unappealing and unsymphathetic.
Wonderful acting and incredible camerawork that intertwines past and present within the same frames. Too bad play is severely dated, as Miss Julie represents Patriarchy's fear of what would happen if women had power. Miss Julie is raised outside of gender stereotypes, and her unwillingness/inability to fit smoothly back into patriarchal norms upsets the "natural order." Only her death can restore the status quo.
