On the plus side, all of that time spent guarding his convictions paid off. Miracle Mile remains a distinctly singular vision, and it’s only because of De Jarnatt’s commitment to ensuring it remained the way he wrote it—jarring tonal shifts and gut-punch of an ending intact—that it’s still being discussed close to 30 years later, even outside of columns focused on nuclear war movies. There’s nothing else like it in that narrowly defined subgenre, and not much like it in cinema, period.

The first time I saw the film, Harry’s romantic impulses felt dated, even troubling… Subsequent viewings of Miracle Mile over years have made me think Harry’s insistent romantic fantasies — of saving his girl, of living together forever after the bomb — are more sad than bad. Harry is the instrument of his own tragedy. He’s a man trying to protect the woman he loves from impending nuclear destruction.

There are special effects, and a few big crowd scenes, but the success of Miracle Mile lies in the way it goes about presenting an intimate view of the coming apocalypse. De Jarnatt’s early reels are confident, even before Harry gets to the diner… And although Miracle Mile regularly finds room for daffy gags, it doesn’t lose sight of the nightmare waiting to hatch beneath L.A.’s quiet streets.
