Synopsis

The legendary soprano Maria Callas—American-born from Greek origins—was one of the supreme artists of the mid-20th century, and an opera icon. This documentary takes us through Callas’ life: from her childhood, early training and rise to stardom, through her tumultuous public life and vocal decline.

Hidalgo is one of the few talking heads in Tom Volf’s new moving and wonderfully researched documentary, Maria by Callas. But if I have one quibble with Volf’s film, it is that there is no footage, nor any mention, of those master classes. Much to his credit, his movie focuses more on the artist and the woman, less on the trivia or the paparazzi coverage.

Whether the results qualify as a comprehensive portrayal is best debated by opera historians, but what is clear is that “Maria by Callas” provides an excellent introduction to Callas’s artistry.

Volf, a photographer turned documentarian, is mesmerized by Callas’ allure and convincingly ensures she is never upstaged by the many famous admirers he shows attending her performances.
