Emerging from the same cross-contaminated genre swamp as Let the Corpses Tan, Mandy achieves its goals with blunter and larger instruments, which is all the better, because where Corpses fails, Mandy succeeds. If Corpses was a music video, Mandy is a whole doom-metal opera in poisonous Technicolor, with an album cover depicting a landscape of magenta, indigo, and golden-yellow ruins.

Like a Black Sabbath song come to life, “Mandy” is so audacious the audience around me in the theatre kept bursting into laughter, a spontaneous expression of surprise and satisfaction. . . . Cosmatos tosses us into a frankly hallucinatory world, with devil-demon creatures on motorbikes, shimmering prismatic fantasies, the creepiest church you’ve ever seen in your life, and enough gore to fill 10 meat lockers.

Hyperstylised and ultraviolent, Mandy is an amped-up theological trip into pulp’s purest quintessence, with Jóhann Jóhannsson’s doomy guitar drones accompanying Cosmatos’s soured nostalgia as the ‘rock ’n’ roll’ promised by the film’s prefatory blurb.

  • chanandre's rating of the film Mandy

[Mandy: more.] The score does reek of death. So sorry to know it was Jóhann's :-[ Cage is great in this. I'm a bit tired that he's constantly put on the 'laughable/over-acting' shelf. As if only Bresson-school'd performances could be valued. (Drive in the woods). Thought about Refn and Hereditary a lot.

  • Wee Hunk's rating of the film Mandy

Don't most failed musicians become serial killers or cult leaders? I'm just so happy that Cage connected with a good movie, though even his bad ones are pretty good. 'Drive Angry'. This movie is pretty funny and hallucinogenic when the blood isn't being splattered everywhere. I was so happy when I thought I heard a bit of 'Dopesmoker' toward the end, but it was just a ripoff.

  • ig_____or's rating of the film Mandy

Honestly, I was expecting the monstrous bikers to be the big baddies, not the religious freaks. This was a trippy ride, full of neon colours and bloody moments. The casting of Nicolas Cage was pure genius. Cosmatos sophomore film proves he's a force to be reckoned with.

  • Nicholas Gregory's rating of the film Mandy

Would have benefitted from an untraditional structure. Its opening quiet-before-the-storm of setting up the relationship isn’t effective, but may have worked better if it was interspersed into the revenge as flashbacks. But, even then, as it stands, I don’t see the point of this being 2 hours? Gonzo, midnight movies that are only-fun often work because they are snappy, energetic... and short.

  • MATTEO BITTANTI's rating of the film Mandy

Cielito lindo. Vicious snowflakes. "You ripped my shirt". Chainsaw deathmatches. Twenty minutes of uninterrupted money shots. This is the most deranged thing since Beyond The Black Rainbow. It's Hellraiser meets Mad Max meets Evil Dead meets anything that Rob Zombie ever dreamed to make. Two words: NICOLAS CAGE. This is the performance of a lifetime. And beyond. Panos! Panos! Panos!

  • msmichel's rating of the film Mandy

Cosmatos' visual style on display here is quite impressive and often awe inspiring with his rich use of filters, lighting and shadow. This may well be the 'wtf' film of 2018 with its strange mix of revenge yarn, black metal and horror homage. Cage gives a great gonzo turn here that the supporting cast (especially Roache) just can't live up to. In the end it is 'style over substance'; but that isn't always bad.

  • Catarina C Gomes's rating of the film Mandy

I love that this movie is like an omage to other films. Nic cage's screaming in the bathroom really made me think of Deadfall and knife dick was very familiar as well. It really makes you pay attention.

  • HKFanatic's rating of the film Mandy

Midnight Movie. "Mandy" adheres too closely to the revenge flick playbook for it to go anywhere truly surprising in its third act, but as a black metal mash-up of "Evil Dead" and "Hellraiser," it believes sincerely in the tenets of its faith. Cosmatos' commitment to his pulp novel influences ensures Nic Cage's bloody warpath is one of 2018's facemelting cinematic delights. See it on the big screen if you can.
