The same narrow vision that keeps the dance scenes turgid also keeps Cher from being more than a mere signifier of herself; Parker’s direction doesn’t respond to Cher, it confines her.

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again is terrible. And irresistible. How a movie that’s almost not even a movie can be both of those things at once is one of the mysteries of filmgoing, and one of its puckish pleasures. . . . It doesn’t really need a plot; its chief job is to prove that ABBA’s songs are unkillable, and sure enough, they live.

Enjoying musicals is a necessary but not sufficient condition for appreciating the Mamma Mia! movies. You must also believe in the foolish yet empowering myth a good musical propagates: the notion that you, given a backup track and enough time to rehearse, might plausibly star in a musical yourself.
