Any time I hear that something is a "camp classic" or an "LGBT classic" (after it was finally pointed out to me that the latter was not, as I had for quite some time assumed, a kind of sandwich) I instinctively want to duck and run for cover. How cheering it is to find that this little old German movie, despite the scandalous reputation, is much better than its labels suggest.
Women, women, women. Love between women and allegorical description of the German society of the early 30's. Not bad, a touch of expressionism, Prussian aristocrats and young girls in uniform. Women, women, women.
Argumento polémico para entonces. De hecho, es tal vez lo único que sobresale. "Muchachas de uniforme" a último momento intenta montar un melodrama, pero pesa más su argumento de internado de adolescentes, además de ser una crítica a las normativas conservadoras.
As much as the film seemed quite odd regarding the pace of the narrative and bits and pieces that seemed all over the place, one can understand why it became such a big hit at the time. Some superb acting from a few girls.
A 1931 lesbian-themed German film is obviously interesting in its historical context, but "Mädchen in uniform" goes way further than that. Cast, cinematography, script, narrative... everything in this movie is, if not brilliant, really commendable anyway.
