Usually, when a director more or less disowns his work, you should expect nothing but the worst. Here, not so much. It may not be soaked with Von Sternberg's creative juices, but it still has a strong duo (How can any one denounce the suave badassery that is ROBERT FUCKING MITCHUM), some decent direction and is also mercifully short. If you're in the mood for good noir melodrama, then check it out.
A hot mess of course and less bizarrely entertaining than HIS KIND OF WOMAN (lacking Vincent Price), but Mitchum & Russell manage to make it sexier. Von Sternberg tries to Dietrich-up Russell in nightclubs and lace, which is kind of cheap but doesn't do her any particular discredit. Hughes' hack job editing & perverse fascinating with getting Mitchum shirtless in/on boats is clearly evident. Good photography & fun.
This 3rd picture in my triple feature ('Gambling Hell','Shanghai Gesture') is the best. I just watched it again because the Mitchum/Russell combo just can't be beat. It's that side of the mouth delivery and inability to take things seriously that I love. I don't care how many people directed it, it's a wonderful movie.
Mitchum is Mitchum. Russell is Russell. This is like His Kind of Woman lite. Worse ways to spend 80 mins. Enjoy the suave who gives a f attitude of Mitchum, on full display here. Good noir. Solid 3 stars
Supposedly this film isn't any good, but you just can't stop watching it. Cut out all the interesting parts of His Kind of Woman, set it in Macao, and let Mitchum and Russell spar. That's all you need for 80 minutes.
Despite the many cooks in the kitchen, it's Sternberg all over the place with his chiaroscura, smoky atmosphere, and exotic setting. Jane Russell may be too down to earth, compared to Dietrich or Tierney - although she's beautifully lensed, but she has a good chemistry with Mitchum. The pair are a hoot to watch, so the circonvoluted plot doesn't matter. The addition of Gloria Grahame is a welcomed bonus.
