LUMIERE AND COMPANY is indeed a love letter to cinema. The idea to invite 40 international directors to make a short movie with original Lumiere's camera is really interesting. They are challenged to become more creative to make a short movie. Everyone who has interest in cinema and its world definitely must see this movie. There great and mediocre shorts in here. And David Lynch's short is the most innovative one...
Great idea, colossally disappointing results. Annoying framing film. Putting sound over the starts and ends of a lot of the short films. Too many male directors of little vision, not enough women. Not enough directors from outside of Europe. Fatuous pseudo-theory questions—"Is film mortal?"—when we could have heard interesting discussion about so many things from the directors. Lovely photographs interspersed.
Most of these shorts didn't do much for me and I was relatively disappointed because this could have gone much better. As most people seem to agree, David Lynch really did the best job with his short and made the most of it. Claude Lelouch, Andrei Konchalovsky, and Peter Greenaway were the others that really did a great job in my personal opinion.
everything that celebrates silent film & the occasional snippets of unpredictable grace one can accidentally bump into daily,deserves some love. it`s a pity many chose to film modern filming equipment, like the ultimate fetish to be revered.they film,ok,but no need pushing this down that slope, les dessous de la profession ain`t that fun after all. i liked Kiarostami & think Lelouch captured the very essence of film.
Two or three great shorts (and some more shitty ones) made with the holy grail of cinema. A breeze of history and a must see for all the movie fans. But it had much more potential and could be really a homage and not just a pile of something.
