I watched it with blinders on. Meaning I ignored the obvious flaws. I wanted it to succeed because I wanted to keep seeing those characters. They revealed little bits of themselves in a tantalizing way. But I didn't want it at the cost of the horses. Stupid horses. But also majestic.
A seamlessly woven, sunbaked view of hard-on-their-luck characters at the horse track. The headlining race in Episode Four gets quite emotional. Jill Hennessy, John Ortiz, and Nick Nolte stand out in unapologetically autonomous roles. David Milch is a beautiful, mumbling mouthpiece for his creations.
