The director labeled this the third in his “BRD Trilogy” (films about life under the postwar reconstruction of Germany), although it was made second; the “middle” episode, VERONIKA VOSS, would be made the following year. Despite this designation, LOLA feels like a middle work—it doesn’t reach the grand emotions of THE MARRIAGE OF MARIA BRAUN and VERONIKA VOSS, but rather achieves what Dave Kehr (writing in 1982) described as "stability, and with it a species of happiness.
