Saw it too many years ago and reviewed yesterday, the surprise is overwhelming: as in René Clair great silent films - and there is an extraordinary sequence of an entire population sleeping, as in Clair's "Paris qui Dort" - and with Buster Keaton's mechanical acrobatics, the derisory and surrealist dynamics take possession of an absolutely ruthles corrosion of the social and the political. Sacrée resistance.
