Lynch is a genius. I don't understand why this commercial has such a poor rating... It is a beautiful short film about lost love, memories and the powers of storytelling... It is also an exploration of the possibilities of the digital medium to re-create the inland empire of our life. P.S. The film is visually very similar to Leighton Pierce's masterful works.
Seeing as the short films were specifically made for promoting Dior as a part of their "Lady Dior Saga" and they specifically told Lynch to make the film around their product, I wouldn't exactly call it "product placement."
Feels (& looks!) like Inland Empire more than anything, so ymmv. Tells a complete narrative in 16mins that isn't as opaque as the aforementioned or Mulholland. Worth a watch for sure. Lynch in Shanghai is a very fun idea 3.5+
Regardless of the reasons, I feel like Lynch has lost grace in his camera movement and his editing since switching to digital. Those are just technicalities though I suppose and if I were to critique the story, I could only say it's certainly a Lynch film. However, it's not one that resonates with me.
