Hotel Monterey

Hôtel Monterey

Directed by Chantal Akerman
United States, Belgium, 1973
Avant-Garde, Documentary

Synopsis

Under Chantal Akerman’s watchful eye, a cheap New York hotel glows with mystery and unexpected beauty, its corridors, elevators, rooms, windows, and occasional tenants framed as though part of an Edward Hopper tableau.

Critics reviews

Shot by Babette Mangolte, who also did the cinematography for Akerman’s JEANNE DIELMAN, the film is deceptively simple. There are a few scenes that, after you’ve contemplated their meaning—or lack thereof—for several moments, you’ll find yourself wondering how she and Akerman even accomplished them (including what appear to be dolly shots that would make Spike Lee proud).
