Mediocre direction with a familiar script padded with white-knuckle fight scenes and over-the-top stunt work. From a formal perspective, the film looked great. The night scenes specifically had a beautiful quality to them - layers of red, blue, and yellow lighting gave it a really gritty, almost genre, feeling. We also learn that James Franco is the least intimidating person in the world.
Do you know what, it's got The Stath in it. The film delivered on its premise and was competently done by all. Enough action, morality, baddies and goodies to keep folks happy. Plus, when one is watching The Stath belt the hell out of several thuggish morons you know full well he could actually do that... Yeah!!!
Jason Statham's recent run of action films have had a pronounced interest in the archetype of the innocent female. Statham's action heroes are constantly trying to defend or save these women. The female imperilled here is Statham's daughter. The Louisiana setting is woefully underused and there are some pacing issues in the opening hour, but Sly Stallone, scripting, can still write a mean firefight when he wants to.
This movie feels like a super computer from an alien planet dreamed it up after absorbing all human history. James Franco is a southern gangster, American hero with a British accent, Jason Statham is his nemesis. Winona Ryder and then Kate Bosworth show up too.. Written by Stallone also. All they had to do was have an animated character and they would have nailed it. Way to fuck up, Aliens. NICE TRY!
the film felt a bit short (and not because it was so enjoyable) but it felt like they could have taken their time a tiny bit. other than that, it was enjoyable. this might be because i am slightly biased when it comes to franco (fav person ever) and statham (favorite actor when it comes to action film). the real star was the kid. she was brilliant and the plot was alright and yeah, it was enjoyable.
