An exotic religious cult is in the middle of its annual sacrificing of a young nymph when they realize that the girl is not wearing the sacrificial ring, and it’s on the finger of Ringo Starr. The Beatles must remove the ring from Ringo’s finger and return it to the cult, thus avoiding death.

Help! is in a class by itself, not so much a matching bookend to A Hard Day’s Night as a half-joyous, half-mournful afterword. The plot is unapologetically silly, and wholly delightful.

On Blu-ray these colors really pop – particularly, the bold use of solid colors in the indoor sequences – and we also notice remarkably subtle qualities of light in the outdoor scenes… Help!‘s dialogue, like the dialogue of A Hard Day’s Night and The Knack (the two Richard Lester films that preceded it) is terrifically clever…

The songs in Help! are down a few notches from the extraordinary level of the score for A Hard Day’s Night, but the title song for Help!, despite its drippings of teenage melancholia, is about the best song the Lennon-McCartney team has conceived. Why, then, am I singing the blues about the Beatles movie? I suppose because I have the feeling that Lester and the Beatles added to each other in their first film together, but that they subtract from each other in their second.
