MUBI, have mercy on us! This is a run-of-the-mill detective flick with lame music scoring, slow motion added in post, and no discernible artistic stamp. The plague symbolism is interesting only in a superficial Da Vinci Code way. Funniest shot that wasn't meant to be funny: when the archeologist is seen dusting away at a perfectly revealed, intact skeleton. If only all digs were that easy.
=== Solid casting (SERRAULT, GOURMET, GADEBOIS) for a careful & faithful cinematographic adaptation f Fred VARGAS's particular universe. Interesting choice of BELVAUX/GARCIA for the DANGLARD/ADAMSBERG tandem.
Mainstream French thriller from director Regis Wargnier (Indochine, East-West) that tells a rather convoluted but entertaining tale that winds up more Dan Brown than Umberto Eco. A rather silly and pat conclusion takes away from its earlier pleasures.
There are references to characters you do not see, or see very little, and suggestions of insight into the mind and abilities of the lead detective that never come again. Feels like jumping in mid stream, probably meant for those who have read the novels. That said it is no worse than a standard serial murderer/detective drama set in a beautiful city. There is a baseline that it is difficult to fall beneath.
Was hoping that this would be better, but the ultimate explanation(s) are too far-fetched. Also, by attempting to squeeze too much in, the movie seems to lurch ahead at times; e.g., a detective talks to a woman about strange signs on her door, and then suddenly a serious investigation is in progress. Huh? A lot of little feints and subplots are tossed in, but most are completely superfluous, and cliched to boot.
