Harriet’s good intentions, the careful way it exposes how families were separated under slavery, and its acknowledgment of the mystical aspects of Tubman’s mission—all that was lost to me as I watched the last scene between Harriet and her former owner. The film just becomes Masterpiece Theatre, historical drama based on something classic.

While director and co-writer Kasi Lemmons’ attempts to squeeze them all into one feature makes for something of a rushed climax – Tubman’s Civil War work becomes a hasty postscript, her later-life activism an onscreen caption – she brings depth and detail to the period of Tubman’s emancipation and her efforts to free the slaves she left behind.
