The golden 90s, these neoromantics with short hair: the search for personal identity in a free world, longing for the impulsive, transgressive love which is worth nothing if it doesn’t drive you crazy. Haircut asks: who am I to you, and when is your love enough? It was great being young in the 90s, despite the racist skinheads that seem to have plagued Portugal as well as Finland, the diagonal extremes of Europe.
This is a pleasant surprise from Sapinho's recourse to a handsome pair whose romantic love is mediated by telltale insecurities, petty egoisms and other obstacles in a film where hairdo is a resonant icon as well as being deconstructed as an all-too-important feature of identity. The vivid colors constitute a major treat and if scriptwise it needed substance, it is nonetheless a refreshingly honest and charming film.
Capturing the raw, unbridled passion of youth in all its infuriating naiveté and unnerving sensuality is a challenging feat that requires a mindfulness for what it feels to be young. Perhaps the secret to the youthful vitality of this film is the fact that it is the feature debut for most of its cast, its crew, and even its shooting locations—filling each moment with the heady authenticity of inexperience.
Lisbon, the mid 90's. A nice film about what was, at the time, a new Portugal: member of the EU, in fast growth, with a new generation of young people ready to break down social conventions and leave the XX century behind. A symbolic approach to the emancipation of women, here represented by what appeared to be a simple haircut, that ended up having a great impact in this relationship.
