The American heist movie enjoyed something of a resurgence in 2017 with the releases of LOGAN LUCKY, BABY DRIVER and GOOD TIME. While the first two of these films are enjoyable, comedic, populist entertainments, the Safdie brothers’ movie is, by contrast, a trickier, more troubling and ultimately more satisfying thing: a breathlessly paced thriller centered on an unlikable protagonist . . . that continually challenges viewers by making disturbing asides about racism in contemporary America.

Good Time, blanked by the Cannes jury and spruned by late-summer audiences, has filmmaking chops that shame most of this fall’s award contenders. The Safdies’ typically intrepid sound design amplifies narrative tension while also evoking psychological turmoil that the brilliant performers must occasionally suppress. The cinematography shifts among black light, neons, and sooty nocturnes at no cost to visual coherence.

Good Time is propulsion at all costs. Pattinson is the unstoppable white male. The system supports him without fault, and everything he does can and ultimately will be forgiven in time. We see him as a sleazeball, a racist, a total cockroach, and we know that he’ll be given every chance to succeed again and again and again. He has the benefit of the doubt. The fact that the Safdies understand this and wring it for all its worth is one of the most bold and honest moves in all of movies this year.

  • El Biffo's rating of the film Good Time

Watching this was a really unpleasant experience. My teenage son hated it, quit 30 minutes in. I hated everyone in this film except for the teenage girl. I kept watching it because the photography(by Sean Price Williams) and images were fabulous (except for the disgusting violence). The ending was totally sweet, though! I'm giving it 4 stars even tho I hated it cuz I do think its a good film, if that makes any sense.

Cross the room if: you've ever fallen in love. Cross the room if: you miss New York shot like this as Cassavetes, Warhol, Leone, Coppola, Menken, Gray, Friedkin, De Palma, Stone, Lumet, Scorsese, Lee, Clark, Menken, Dassin, Seidelman, Carpenter, Polanski, Kazan, Ferrara & Pakula once did too. Cross the room if: you love Oneohtrix Point Never's music. Cross the room if: you can save your loved ones but not yourself.▽

  • Nicholas Gregory's rating of the film Good Time

Good Time starts exciting. It also knows films are at their most affecting not when aiming for arthouse purpose with ambiguous introspection, but when the plot/story, and thus, emotion are straight-forward and all elements move with a force. The plot always has a clearly-seen reason, unlike many A24 films that wait until the end to quasi-show what they're about. It eventually gets void of dimension and drive, though.

  • Gia de Almeida's rating of the film Good Time

Incredible direction, cinematography and soundtrack. This film is just beautiful to look at. Stellar performances all around and a near faultless script make you sympathise and root for these completely disfunctional characters. Safdie knows exactly where he wants to go and the result is a family love story that is tender and raw and that leaves you on the edge of your seat.

  • Zac Weber's rating of the film Good Time

The music and sound design envelope the film in an anxious, pounding aesthetic that's hard to escape. Beyond the slick photography, the performances by Robert Pattison, Ben Safdie, and Taliah Webster were some of the most convincing I've seen on screen all year. Even Jennifer Jason Leigh throws herself into her minor role. Great film.

  • OFF_FRAME's rating of the film Good Time

BOOM!! An absolute amoral firecracker!! Good Time is down and dirty but never bleak. It's thumping heart, punk photography, superb performances and bold soundtrack keep the momentum and action pummelling from start to finish. 4.5 stars

  • Palmat's rating of the film Good Time

Disappointing movie considering the rave reviews. Pattinson and the score by Oneohtrix Point Never are spot on but eveything besides that is a dull second rate drama masquerading as a thriller populated by losers and fuck ups and the narrative lacks urgency and loses steam very quickly. At the half way point I couldn´t care less about the characters and from then on the movie didn´t work for me.

  • HKFanatic's rating of the film Good Time

"Good Time's" neon lighting, ambient synth soundtrack, and nocturnal atmosphere bring to mind the work of Nicolas Winding Refn infused with a street level, documentary-like grit. Robert Pattinson has never been this dynamic onscreen, and the film manages to feel like a genre movie without a single setpiece or very much in the way of "action" beyond breathless running. The most propulsive cinematic experience of 2017.
