Freeheld Directed by Peter Sollett

What are people saying?

  • Steve Pulaski's rating of the film Freeheld

Lifetime-fare with thoroughly strong performances and little else; perfect example of a film with a worthy message that is sacrificed for cheap, sentimental pathos. Julianne Moore needs to get roles where she's not physically and mentally deteriorating with every cut, but she's just so damn convincing and good in them. Michael Shannon is terrific and destined to be underrated too; give this guy an Oscar for existing.

  • FISCHER's rating of the film Freeheld

Sans aucunement dévaloriser l'interprétation des deux principales actrices, nous sommes tout de même en présence d'une œuvre pesante, lourdement démonstrative, une sorte de "Love story" homosexuelle tire-larmes, au pathos simpliste et gluant...

  • msmichel's rating of the film Freeheld

What should have been an important docu-drama on an event that helped lead to gay marriage, instead winds up feeling like a Lifetime cliché despite a script by Ron Nyswaner (Philadelphia). Chemistry between Moore and Page is weak and one feels a stronger bond exists with her police partner portrayed by a stoic Michael Shannon. Wasted opportunity but shows LGBT cinema in going mainstream can be generic as well.

  • spiderliliez's rating of the film Freeheld

That was quite difficult to watch. Real-life stories, despite being altered for Hollywood is still so much more interesting for me nowadays. Though I want to say, Ellen Page and Julianne Moore didn't have that romantic chemistry, but their tandem worked well for this drama. I loved the emphasis of equality over traditional union. Coz really, not everyone wants marriage. But equality is everyone's right!

•'s rating of the film Freeheld

  • Yayo's rating of the film Freeheld

The way Stacie (Ellen Page) stares at officer Hester (J. Moore).. daaamn. T frustration and displeasure for the power of public servants that got into their heads.

  • Sophie Wilson Wardman's rating of the film Freeheld

important story that i'm glad has been told. lovely performances; to be expected from the cast however, i wish i had been aware of the documentary before watching the dramatised version as the part that touched me the most was the photos and footage of the real laurel and stacie.

  • Sarah Fonseca's rating of the film Freeheld

3.0 / Will feature films based on documentaries ever not feel awkward? Stellar performances and superb filmmaking plagued by a mediocre script. Cringed my way through every speck of mushy dialogue––perhaps because they were bad, and perhaps because I'm unaccustomed to sharing intimate narratives of gay lives with mainstream audiences. Seconding the comments about Michael Shannon being an underrated tour de force.
