Four Sons Directed by John Ford

Critics reviews

Throughout, Ford echoes the films of the German director F. W. Murnau… The mustachioed, uniformed, and potbellied postman is a dead ringer for the doorman protagonist of Murnau’s 1924 drama “The Last Laugh”; Ford filmed on sets left over from Murnau’s first Hollywood film, the poetic romance “Sunrise”; and he imitates some of Murnau’s distinctive camera moves. The result is no mere homage, but a drastically different take on themes that Ford derived from Murnau’s films.
