Charged by a coolly assured style, shocking perversity, and savage gallows humor, Fists in the Pocket tells the story of a twisted young man who takes drastic measures to rid his grotesquely dysfunctional family of its various afflictions in this astonishing 1965 debut from Marco Bellocchio.

Bellochio's vitriolic attack on values like family, religion, tradition and, generally, conformity, constitutes a disarmingly fresh observation of implosion, which, unlike Lanthimos' facile de-dramatizations on similar themes, takes seriously the power of film image and conjures genuinely formalist visual subtexts. Castel's Christ figure devours the evil befell on society and, appropriately, ends in (eternal) crisis.
Coldly terrifying portrayal of the grave (pun intended) dangers of learned helplessness. The picture of Marlon Brando on the sister's headboard sums up Alessandro and the theme of disaffected youth, railing against the confines of society. The villa's walls are crowded with portraits of ancestors who look down upon the captive, decaying family. Maybe one warm character might have helped the audience care more.
Un frère psychopathe narcissique prêt à passer à l'acte, sa sœur qui l'admire, l'autre frère soumis & l’aîné dominateur. Dangereuse combinaison dépeinte par BELLOCCHIO dans l'Italie provinciale des 60ties == One brother narcissic psycho ready to kill, his sister in love for him, the other brother submissive & the elder domineering. A dangerous combination portrayed by BELLOCCHIO in the provincial Italy of the 60ties.
2 1/2 stars. It has it moments/intriguing aspects however I don't think it's great nor even that good of a film, especially going by all the outstanding things I've heard/read about over the years about it. Perhaps my expectations were too high going into it since I've finally got around to watching it (DVR'd it on TCM a couple weeks back). Some nice black & white cinematography though.
Film italiano, sobre la putrefaccion social de una familia que vive en los suburbios, memorable viaje que va de la locura al horror, cada personaje con tintes de montruosa desadaptación social, anormalidad que lleva a la tragedia.
I think the first problem is that the character tells everyone what he's going to do. You just sit there and watch him. The second problem is that it's meant to be shocking, and therefore it becomes a bit of a bore.
